1.13. Images on web

When working with images in your website, it is important to now the fundamental rules for types and sizes. These will be explained in the following.

Image types

It is important to keep to the image tyoes "jpeg, png and gif" when working with the web. Other formats can create problems when viewing them online, especially in relation to old browsers e.g. Internet Explorer can not display tif images.

Image DPI

HostedShop recommends that you use images with 72 dpi for web, as no browser can display higher dpi than that. A higher dpi can give differences in colours and other display problems e.g. when HostedShop is creating automatic thumbnails. Also, images with a higher dpi than 72, will make the load time unneccessary slow.

Image sizes

With consideration to the load time, it is important to optimize your images i.e. their height and width, to minimize their size in relation to KB. Large images will create heavy websites that gives the user a slow experience and lower priority with regards to the search engines. It your work with the HostedShop text editor, you will normally never need images wider than 600 x 800 pixels and larger than 100-200 KB. However, it may be necessary to have larger images to enable zoom on products. You can control the maximum upload size in SETTINGS. For images that are used otherwere than in the content, HostedShop will automatically create thumbnails that cohere in size and quality. Read further here.

It is possible to reduce images (height / width) in the text editor, but that will not make the origianl image smaller. It is therefor recommended only to use the text editor for minor adjustments. When sending e-mails and newsletter, it is paramount that the image is not adjusted in the text editor, as most e-mail clients e.g. Outlook, overlooks the codes that reduce the image, which in then shown in it's original size.
